Summer 2002 saw the Commonwealth Games coming to Horwich. The XV11 Commonwealth Games, called the 'Friendly Games' were actually staged in Manchester but Horwich was proud to play a vital role in their success.
Horwich hosted two of the total of seventeen events.
The English badminton team won a gold medal in the magnificent Bolton Arena.
Around the Crown and Lever Park Avenue delighted crowds thronged to cheer as cyclists flashed by on roads made 'sterile' for the staging of this magnificent spectacle.
Yellow and purple flowers bloomed in profusion and our street columns carried banners welcoming everyone to the Games and to Horwich - a proud town with its civic pride boosted forever by this marvellous event.
The toughness of the mountain bikers as they struggled with the challenging course over Wilderswood and Rivington thrilled the many spectators who watched in lovely sunshine.
