Carol Walker (left)

Carol Walker has given a great deal of service to Horwich in many ways, and has volunteering roles too numerous to mention. For instance, she has been a keen supporter of the RSPCA for over twenty years, and now holds an advice centre every Saturday morning in Horwich Resource Centre.

She is also involved with the Volunteer Bureau and has helped to find hundreds of people volunteer positions.

Whilst Horwich Town Council was pleased to acknowledge Carol’s magnificent contribution in so many ways, it was for her valuable work in organising and running the Friday Club that she was presented with the Horwich Civic Award.

The Friday Club, based at Horwich Resource Centre, provides a basic but tasty lunch for the elderly and vulnerable. Some of the Members have special needs. The lunch is followed by some social activity with bingo being a firm favourite.

Members also really look forward to the trips out which include Blackpool for the illuminations, Pendle Hill and various places for lunch. They also enjoy Party Nights at Rivington and bingo nights for charity.

Geoff Waine (right)

As a founder Member, Geoff Waine was instrumental in forming Horwich Heritage, an organisation dedicated to preserving and enhancing appreciation of the remarkable history of the Horwich area.

Geoff has dedicated a great amount of his time over the last twenty two years to the development of Horwich Heritage from its modest beginnings in 1985, to the strong society that exists today.

Howich Heritage has around 200 members, and recently moved into their new Heritage Centre within Horwich Resource Centre. He deserves a great deal of credit for this wonderful achievement.

Geoff Waine has served as both Chairman of Horwich Heritage (1985 to 1995) and Secretary (1995 to 2005) and continues to be an active Committee Member. He has served Horwich in others ways. For instance, he was the Principal of Horwich College, and is also an active Member of Horwich Rotary.
